Is your phone compatible with Virtual Reality?

Added: 07/11/2017

Here at STEALTH VR we get the question “Will my phone work with your headsets” and just as important “Is my phone compatible with Virtual Reality?”

So we have decided it would be a great idea to let everyone know whether their phone would be compatible with Virtual Reality. Has you phone made the list?

A sensor you need to look out for on your phone model is the Gyroscope sensor – without this, your phone won’t work with Virtual Reality apps such as Google Cardboard, as this sensor is used to look around in the virtual space by tracking the movement of your phone.

Roll (Y Axis) – As the name suggests, imagine you were lay flat, floating and rolling at the same time, this is the axis which knows which way is up! Or in VR terms this would be to tilt your head like a confused puppy as you navigate through a winding track in the Virtual World.

Yaw (Z Axis) – This allows you to twist your your phone looking left to right in the Virtual Reality experience, which can allow you to go full 360 Degrees in your chosen video or app!

Pitch ( X Axis) – This allows you to look up and down, but in full 360 Degrees! Like if you were really good at somersaults, don’t try this though! It will only end one way and if we need to say it we will… DONT TRY THIS AT HOME!! Just stick to looking up and down!

Each axis may have elements which you wouldn’t really use unless you found yourself in a situation with no gravity…But the Gyroscope sensor works all of the axis labelled above at the same time, to give you 6DoF (6 Degrees of Freedom) allowing you to look up, look down, look all around! Leaving you in awe of the amazing Virtual environment you have found yourself in.

Still unsure? We have a little test here at STEALTH VR to test your phone which is very simple to do and you don’t need to know the ins and outs of the micro-electromechanical systems that help your most prized handheld possession transport you to a Virtual World.

Download the YouTube App:

iOS     Android

Search “360 Video” and select one of your preference… We chose Spider Man Homecoming because, well it’s SpiderMan in Virtual Reality, who wouldn’t want that?

Anyway, once you have chosen your video, turn your phone to the landscape position and see your Z axis working it’s magic! You may already see the imagery on your phone wobble as you move it slightly (this is a good sign), but you should see the icon to enter the split screen which looks like a pair of goggles. as below.

Once this is selected, your phone screen should look like this..

Then, move your phone up and down… left and right and don’t forget to look behind you to see the full works of the genius that is the gyroscope! If you’re unsure on whether you are doing this right, check out our guide to using VR on YouTube

If it works, CONGRATULATIONS you are one step closer to starting your Virtual Reality Experience!  If not.. unfortunately, with your current phone model you won’t be able to enjoy hours of gaming in a full 360 degree virtual environment, experience jumping from a plane or the exhilarating feeling of adrenaline fuelled rollercoasters from around the world in the comfort of your own home….
